Four young newcomers try to integrate in Belgium, and wonder how to deal with love, friendship and seduction in this grey country. In an abandoned theatre their imagination takes the upper hand.

Jury Declaration, Transcending Borders Festival:

“Newcomers presents an optimistic angle where love is prevailing over racism and radicalism. It reflects on an integration and relational model that could inspire decisionmakers for future sustainability and social cohesion. Through artistic performances, we get to know the characters, their struggles, their dreams and their fears presented with honesty and with no shame. In the end, the film serves as a perspective of the new generation living in Europe, opens the dialogue along the lines of tolerance. For its urgency and the bravery to differ from the mainstream discourse, we award it the Future Award.”

Portrait of Camille Ghekiere - Director
When I was ten I got an assignment at school to draw a ship. I drew a ship and added a clan ofmermaids, caught up in a family drama that involved abduction and ancestral secrets. Withouthesitation my teacher put ‘0/10’ on my drawing, and showed it to the class as an example of notlistening to an assignment. I had to draw a ship and I came up with a story.

Twenty years later, I write and direct documentaries with fictional freedom, and fiction with asense of humor. My storytelling style is characterized by symbolism and evocation, the imminentpossibility of humor and playfulness, and a close attention to music and sound.

Currently I’m finishing a documentary short, Romeria Z, shot in Andalusia, Spain, and working onthe lasting social impact campaign of my first feature documentary, Les Dames Blanches, which—beyond its regular cinema trajectory—is being used across various sectors of healthcare.

Alongside from my independent work, I am open to commissioned projects, mainly for social andnon-profit initiatives and kind for-profit brands. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you are curious.Clients include Stad Leuven, VRT, the Royal Academy of Medicine, University of Ghent andBellerose. I also teach creative documentary masterclasses.
